Mathematics is a complex subject to most of us. “Simplification” is an important area in all competitive exams such as SSC, UPSC, IBPS, SBI, and other state-wise public service commissions. Simplification is nothing but finding the solution from a complex calculation. Hence, understanding the importance of simplification will improve your mental ability.
The Basic rule of simplification is BODMAS Rule, i.e. Bracket, Order, Division, Multiplication, Addition, Subtraction.
In order to solve simplification questions correctly,
- First, the brackets should be applied.
- Next exponents should be evaluated
- Next, division and multiplication should be performed
- Finally, addition and subtraction should be performed
An expression is given comprising numbers, literals, in simplification questions. Your work is to find out the definite value. It can be done only by knowing basic theorems and formulae.
There are two types of simplifications. One is finding the missing number from the calculation. Such questions can be simplified with basic operations.
The second type is understanding the association between the given numbers and simplifying using the simplification rules.
Some of the examples for simplifications:
- (10.8x16x12) + (3.6x56x9.2)
Options: 1.3968.41 2.3927.51 3.3649.19 4. 3928.32
When you take (10.8x16x12) + (3.6x56x9.2)
Both the numbers within the brackets are even
So, the option 4.3928.32 is the right answer
Generally, the 1st question of Quantitative aptitude section of any bank exam starts from simplification. It is a key part of QA section. Usually, in Bank Clerical exams around 10-15 questions are expected from Simplification that usually takes less than one minute to solve.

Apply BODMAS Rule
First solve the brackets = 18 + 22 / 11 * 6* 2 – 5
Solve exponents = 18 + 22 / 11 * 36 – 5
Attempt division and multiplication (from L to R) = 18+2 * 36-5
Finally, add and subtract (from L to R)= 18+72-5
- Solve 4433.764 – 2211.993 – 1133.667 + 3377.442
Consider the following as
4433.764 = 4434
2211.993 = 2212
1133.667 = 1134
3377.442 = 3378
4434 – 2212 – 1134 + 3378 = 4466
